Lewes Visitors Guide

Lewes is the County Town of East Sussex, on the south coast of England.

Lewes is an important transport hub, being on the main A27 trunk route from Eastbourne to Southampton, the A26 from Maidstone to Newhaven, and the A275 towards London.

Lewes railway station offers hourly fast trains to London and local trains to Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings, along with a branch line to Seaford.

Lewes has several significant historic buildings, including Lewes Castle, the remains of Lewes Priory, Bull House (the former home of Tom Paine), Southover Grange and public gardens. The Round House, a secluded former windmill in Pipe Passage, was the home of author Virginia Woolf.

Just outside of Lewes is the famous Glyndebourne opera house.

Lewes is twinned with Waldshut-Tiengen in Germany and Blois in France.
