Liphook Visitors Guide

Liphook is a large village in East Hampshire. It is just over 4 miles west of Haslemere and lies on the Hampshire/West Sussex border.

Liphook has good communication links, being near the A3 trunk road from London to Portsmouth and has a railway station on the main line from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour. Trains are operated by South West Trains and provide an hourly service in each direction.

Liphook grew as a coaching stop between London and Portsmouth during the 17th and 18th centuries. Liphook also served as a base during the First World War and the Second World War for Canadian troops stationed in Southern England. Until recent modifications to the A3 in preparation for the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel, the A3 trunk road was lined with Maple trees planted in memory of these Canadian soldiers.

Local tradition has it that Lord Nelson spent his last night in England in Liphook before sailing for the Battle of Trafalgar.
