Winchester Visitors Guide

Winchester is a city in Hampshire and is at the Western end of the South Downs National Park.

Winchester has excellent communication links, being on the M3 motorway from London to Southampton and the New Forest

Winchester has a mainline railway station, with regular trains to London, Southampton, Bournemouth, Reading, Birmingham and Manchester. There is also a regular service to Southampton Parkway station for Southampton Airport.

Winchester has numerous tourist attractions including Winchester Cathedral, and King Arthur's Round Table which hangs in the Great Hall of Winchester Castle. Winchester also has a Gothic Guildhall.

In Saxon times, Winchester was the capital of Wessex, and a statue of King Alfred the Great stands prominently at the entrance to the city.

Winchester has a busy shopping centre, and a large number of pubs, restaurants and cafes.

There is a wide range of accommodation available in Winchester, from Bed and Breakfast to high quality four star hotels.

Winchester is twinned with Laon in France and Gießen in Germany.
